Q & A:

What is your daily motivation?

I just simply love swimming, biking and running. I'm working hard in becoming the best triathlete I can be but it's not the wins and other achievements that thrive me the most but the huge passion I have towards doing endurance training and racing. I couldn't imagine my life without the feeling I get when going long and hard.

Favorite training area?

My home town Helsinki is actually quite great for triathlon - there are many clear lakes for swimming, nice calm roads for biking and perfect sandy roads for running. Anyway the weather is warm enough only for two or three months per year so during the last years I've been training mostly in Gran Canary in wintertime. I love the island as the weather is just perfect and there are so many beautiful and demanding hills to climb!

What is your special need - besides your equipment - for race day?

I always use mint-coloured nailpolish. I've used the same colour since 1998 so when it get's tough during a race, I can just look at my nails and the colour reminds me that I've done this before and can do it again! I also have a starshaped pin in my hair as it gives me luck and then I do drink beetroot juice before the race as it gives a boost for endurance.

The most beautiful (1.) and the most distressing (2.) experience in your career:

1. Finishing my first iron distance race in Ironman Barcelona last october in 8 h 48min. I had been waiting for doing this long ironman triathlon for about 20 years so the race day was full of big emotions. Being the first athlete to miss the European new flag spot for both Beijing and London olympics.

How would you describe yourself in one phrase?

Passionate crazy marsupilam with lot's of Finnish sisu (=guts).
